About the company

Cerca Magnetics is a neuroimaging technology company developing wearable brain imaging systems using quantum-enabled sensors. Originally spun out from the University of Nottingham, the company has developed the world’s first wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanner powered by optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) technology. Unlike conventional MEG systems, which are bulky and require patients to remain completely still, Cerca’s wearable technology enables brain activity to be measured while patients move naturally. This has significant applications across areas including paediatrics, epilepsy, dementia and broader neurological research, whilst improving accessibility and patient experience.

Why we invested

We believe Cerca is well positioned to become a global leader in wearable neuroimaging technology. The company is addressing clear limitations in traditional brain imaging systems through a differentiated platform that combines cutting-edge neuroscience, physics and engineering expertise.

Cerca has demonstrated strong commercial progress since inception, achieving international sales with leading research institutions whilst remaining highly capital efficient. The business benefits from clear technological advantages, including movement-tolerant imaging, helium-free operation and improved signal quality generated by sensors positioned closer to the scalp.

The company is also progressing towards clinical adoption, including ongoing work towards FDA approval in the United States. We believe the combination of strong technical differentiation, growing commercial traction and expanding clinical applications positions Cerca well for long-term growth within the global neuroimaging market.
