About the company

Cerca is a University of Nottingham spin-out founded in July 2020 in partnership with MSL Quantum Limited. The company has developed the world’s first wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain scanner using quantum-enabled optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) sensors. Traditional MEG systems are bulky, helium-dependent, and intolerant to movement, meaning the patient must remain completely still, making it difficult to monitor brain activity in children or those suffering seizures. These MEG systems rely on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) sensors cooled with expensive liquid helium. Cerca’s innovation enables brain activity to be measured while patients move naturally, opening up the opportunity to help children, athletes, dementia patients, and individuals with neurological disorders who cannot remain still.

The system integrates a wearable OPM helmet, a magnetically shielded room, active field-control coils and software developed at the University of Nottingham.

Why we invested

Cera Care has transformed the delivery of care in the home and has in the process become Europe’s largest provider of digital-first home healthcare, redefining healthcare by moving more and more services out of hospitals and into people’s own homes.
